ASI Camera with full frame sensor?

Post by wolpi » Fri Oct 12, 2018 10:39 am

Hello,
I saw the limited editions of full frame color cameras, e.g. ASI128MC Pro.

The data looks nice, just that it is color ...
Is there any chance / plans to build a monochrome version???

I'm using a TS86SDQ which has a flat field of >50mm, so I'm looking for a nice big camera with big pixels.
Another choice would be a CCD camera with Kodak 16003 chip (from another company),
but for speed this one would be more interesting.

Any plans on that?
(I would agree on testing an alpha version ...)

regards
wolpi

Hi there
We are waiting for Sony monochrome full-frame sensor, didn't thinking to modify IMX128. We think modify sensor is really risky, probably have potential issues.

Hi Sean,
thanks for the info. Sounds promising!

With modifying i referred to stealing them from the production line before they can put the colour filter :)
is there any time frame on when it will appear? (Years / month / days ...)

wolpi, I cannot give you any fixed estimate, but I can tell you one thing. I (and many others) have been waiting for a large mono new-generation CMOS chip for many, many years. Actually I have used the CCD chip KAI-11002ME for last 8 years as there wasn't anything newer or better.

And there is no any sign of anything that a 36x24mm mono chip will ever hit the market (not speaking about being in any reasonable price range that it would ever make sense to make it to the astrocamera)...

I could give you an estimate of 6-7 years from now :-) things are improving and we finally see some signs of new chips coming out. Unfortunately, there are either smallish (like 17mm diagonal or so) or ultra large (60-70mm diagonal). The large ones, like e.g. IMX411 are nice and great, but the price will be like $15.000-$20.000,- and even a Tak FSQ-106 would have issues with the corners...

to end with an optimistic comment - there will soon be at least APS-C mono cmos chip on the market later this year... AFAIK it won't have the greatest performance like some other 1/2" tiny chips, but reasonably well compared to 30 years old CCD technology...

I'm not sure about time, we are more anxious than users.

Now it would be more interesting to steal the new IMX410 sensor before putting bayer matrix :

2 questions :
- Is it possible do directly change the sensor of ASI 128 to upgrade to an ASI 410 ?
- Do Sony plan a monochrome version of IMX410 ?

Best.

it is not such easy, if possible we will make a different product.
Sony didn't tell us if they plan to make monochrome verions or not, but we will keep in touch with Sony.
