I've been diligently following this issue since I ordered my AIR two months ago. Units were backordered until late last month, so I was hoping while I waited that the promised support of EOS R would materialize before mine arrived. I'm fortunate in that my starter camera, a Canon T7i, is supported and works with AIR flawlessly, but there are little features I really like in my EOS R that has me pining for its support in the AIR.
After some thought and experimentation, I'd like to offer a bridge for all you fellow R and Ra owers. Granted, there's a cost associated with it, but if you can swing it, maybe it'll provide some temporary consolation until ZWO is able to support our favorite camera. Since I bought my AIR in a bundle that included ZWO's ASI120MM-MINI Camera and 30mm f/4 Mini Guide Scope, I knew I would at least be able to add guiding to my tracked shots. I learned that with a properly focused MINI, I can set up the MINI as the primary camera and use it to do really fast polar alignment because the MINI and AIR speak to each other well (note, the MINI sees less than 50 stars, so your focus will have to be pretty good for the plate solving to work). Once I'm aligned, I switch the MINI to guiding.
Now, the workaround. From some other photographic work, I have a MIOPS camera trigger. They recently started supporting scenarios, so I plug in the trigger to my R and use it to program my shot schedule. I suspect that If you take deep sky photos with a filter wheel, you can use the AIR to control the wheel schedule and time things with the MIOPS trigger to reproduce the functionality of the AIR with your R or Ra.
I know its unpleasant to think you have to pay more to get the functionality you thought you already bought, but if you're longing to have your AIR begin earning its keep and you don't want to wait indefinitely for firmware support, the extra gear might tide you over until ZWO's undertermined future date.
Clear skies!
