Confusion Over ASICamera Setup Camera Gain Settings and ASI2600MC Pro Gain Plots

I have an ASI2600MC Pro. The Read Noise / Dynamic Range vs. Gain Plots at the ZWO link below range from 0 to 450. I want to set the 2600 to a Gain of 100 per the ZWO plots so I get the best Read Noise and Dynamic Range from the camera. The camera Gain settings in "ASICamera Setup" are 0 to 100. It looks like an absolute scale. The "ASICamera Setup" Preset Drop Downs areā€¦

- Highest Dynamic Range
- Unity Gain
- Lowest Read Noise
- Manual

How can I set the camera to the Gain of 100 per the ZWO documentation at the link below?

I am using ASICamera Setup V 6.0.3.28.

Can you tell me what software did you use?We may help you according to the software that you use.

Hi Moson,

I am having similar issue with the ASI 2600MC Pro.

i) When I use Sequence Generator Pro I need to use the ZWO ASCOM drivers. This only allows you to set a maximum gain of 100 .

ii) When I use SharpCap Pro it allows me to set the gain up to 700 (see in red circle).

iii) When I look at ZWO website, it seems to suggest maximum gain is 450.

What I want to make sure is that I am getting a gain of 100 in Sequence Generator Pro so that I am sure I am getting maximum dynamic range. I think the native drive in the SharpCap is working correctly and if I set the gain to 100 in that software the ASI 2600MC is set correctly to 100. I am not sure that the ZWO ASCOM driver is working correctly, because the maximum you can set in the ASCOM driver is 100? Who can I be sure that I can get a gain of 100 in Sequence Generator Pro using the ASCOM driver?

Thanks

The ZWO ASCOM driver will working correctly. And we set the gain range at 0-100, because it is enough to use.
We haven't test it in Sequence Generator Pro, we suggest you to use our ASIStudio software.

Hi;

I have the very same question. Thank you for the good explanation but ZWO, your response is incomplete. Please tell us if the 100 value on the ASCOM driver is equivalent to the 100 unity gain value. Thank you

Michel
PS. I dont understand why the whole range is NOT available... seems weird.

The 100 value on the ASCOM driver is not equivalent to the 100 unity gain value. There are two explanations below for your reference:
1) Gain setting 0: this allows to use the full well capacity completely and expose longer and with lower risk of saturating stars respectively.
2) Gain setting 100: this allows to take advantage of low readout noise. At still higher gain, the readout noise will not decrease significantly any more, but the dynamic range drops considerably. Therefore these higher gain settings are not reasonable at all.
